Festivalgoers Warned by Insurer

One in ten who have attended a music festival in the UK has been stolen from, Zurich has revealed.

The thousands of festivalgoers scheduled to descend on Glastonbury this weekend could be leaving themselves vulnerable to theft, insurer Zurich has warned.

According to the insurance provider, one in ten Britons who have previously attended a festival has had their possessions stolen while on-site. Moreover, it was found that many were providing rich pickings for thieves: the average value of personal possessions taken by people to events such as Glastonbury comes to over £260.

Zurich found that 82 per cent of the group take their mobile phones with them to the festival, while 62 per cent take cameras and 16 per cent take iPods and mp3 players.

Mike Quinton, managing director for Direct & Partnerships at Zurich, said: "One in four British adults said they were planning on attending a festival this summer and it would be all too easy to get swept up in the summer spirit and forget to take even the simplest of precautions with their belongings.

"Our research shows that many music lovers are taking unnecessary risks by storing expensive goods in tents, carrying pricey items on them and failing to consider protecting themselves from theft. We urge all festival goers this summer to plan ahead, only take what they need to as well as checking their cover before they go."

Along with its research, Zurich also released a series of "top tips" for festivalgoers. Leaving credit and debit cards at home, taking out personal possessions insurance and using on-site security lock-ups for valuables such as passports all came highly recommended by the provider.
